Prime Timers Toronto is a varied and diverse group of gay and bisexual men over fourty who gather in a supportive atmosphere to enjoy social, educational and recreational activities.
Our members come from all walks of life and all income levels. Some Prime Timers are fathers and care givers. They are workers or they are retired. Some are always on the go and others enjoy quiet company in their homes. Prime Timers have a zest for life and sharing it with others throughout the world.
Prime Timers was founded in 1987 by retired professor, Mr. Woody Baldwin. He felt that there was a need for a group which catered to the social and friendship needs of the more mature gay and bisexual male. Woody began the first Chapter in Boston by placing an ad in a local paper. He expected only a small turnout and was surprised when over fourty people showed up. This indicated to Woody that there was indeed a need to support aging gay and bisexual men. Now this organization has grown to approximately fifty chapters worldwide, located mainly in Canada and the U.S. but as far afield as Australia.group
The Toronto chapter was founded in 1994 and, until recently, was one of Toronto's best-kept secrets. In the past two years we have begun to promote ourselves and hold new membership events with the aim of reaching more men. We currently have about 200 members.
Travel opportunities for members are vast. Individual chapters welcome the chance to meet visitors from out of town. Other chapters enjoy showing off their communities and having a visitor come away with a feeling of kinship and of having bonded with new-found friends.
Prime Timers Toronto will be hosting the 2009 Prime Timers World-Wide Convention. Past conventions have been held in Vancouver, Dallas, Palm Springs, Washington DC, Houston, Orlando and Reno.
Several of our members attend these conventions and help us to maintain contact with our international organization besides enjoying themselves immensely.
Our organization is emerging as a leading force in gay and bisexual communities, and while we are not a political organization, we are concerned with society as it affects the aging gay and bisexual population. As our organization grows, we will be leading the pack in seeking answers to the needs and problems of the mature gay and bisexual man.
